Abstract Artist Judy Cox
online galleries: Judy's Journey in the Minimalist Style

My journey in creating minimalist paintings in the abstract, comes after years of producing expressionist art. I felt a need to simplify my work. There were two ways I wanted to try to do this. One was by using white; the other was to use minimalist form in my paintings. One of the results of this was the Minimalist White Paintings Gallery.

Though I am not a Buddhist, I like the teachings of Buddhism. When I simplify my statements through painting, I attempt to express inner peace. I also wish to convey space and timelessness. Even with chaos everywhere, it is possible to retreat within and be “in tune”. Presently, I work in white and in color while continuing to attempt to convey peace and joy.

Abstract Minimialism Defined

One definition of minimalism: “reducing a work of art to the minimal number of colors, values, shapes, lines and texture”. My quest has been to simplify my paintings, and eliminate boundaries. I believe there is a harmony within each of us. I also believe there is suffering/fear in life due to everyday stress and struggles. My belief is that when one takes the time to be more aware of the harmony inside, the suffering/fear is reduced. It is simple to be aware, yet difficult to put into practice. My desire is to express this harmony by allowing the piece of art to go beyond the limits of the canvas or paper.

Harmony

I do not agree with Webster's definition of "minimalism" which has you reduce the texture of your paintings. I have not reduced the texture in my minimalist paintings. I love working with thick encaustic oils and encourage viewers to actually touch my abstracts in order to feel the thickness. This is a way to interact with the piece and another way to decrease separation between the painting and viewer, thus creating harmony.
